Switch from Gmail
This guide is for people with a personal @gmail.com address who want a @cirrux.me address instead. Your mail, calendar and contacts come with you, and your Gmail address keeps working while you move. People who still write to your old address won't lose you: their mail ends up in Cirrux too.
Before you start
A gmail.com address can't be moved: Google owns it. What you can move is everything in it. If you use Google Workspace with your own domain instead, follow Switch to Cirrux so you keep your address.
Steps
Claim your @cirrux.me address
Sign up at account.cirrux.co and choose the @cirrux.me option. Pick the address you want, then choose monthly or yearly billing.
Bring your Gmail, calendar and contacts over
In Cirrux Mail, go to Settings → Sync & Import and click Connect Google account. Sign in with your Gmail account and allow read-only access. Choose which Gmail labels and Google calendars to bring over, then click Start sync.
The first import can take a while for a large mailbox. We email you when it's done. After that, Cirrux checks Gmail every hour for anything new. Nothing in your Google account is changed or deleted. See Google Sync for the details.
During setup, add an extra label to everything the sync brings over, for example Gmail. Later on, that label tells you at a glance which mail still came in through your old address.
Forward new Gmail to Cirrux
The hourly sync already brings new mail over. If you'd rather have it arrive right away, set up forwarding in Gmail:
- In Gmail, open Settings → See all settings → Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Click Add a forwarding address and enter your @cirrux.me address.
- Google sends a confirmation code to that address. Open it in Cirrux Mail and enter the code in Gmail.
- Choose Forward a copy of incoming mail and save.
Set up your phone and computer
Use Cirrux in the browser, or add your @cirrux.me address to the mail app you already use. On an iPhone or Mac, install the Cirrux profile and mail, calendar and contacts are set up in one go. For other apps, see Compatible apps.
Tell people your new address
Let the people you write to most know about your new address. The rest learn it as you go: when you reply in Cirrux to mail that was sent to your Gmail address, your reply comes from your @cirrux.me address. When they reply to that, they write to your new address.
Update your accounts
Change the email address on the accounts that matter: your bank, your phone provider, the government services you use, online shops. Start with any account you use to reset passwords, so you can still get back in once you stop checking Gmail.
Searching your imported mail for words like “welcome” or “verify your email” is a quick way to find where you signed up.
After a few weeks, look at what still arrives at your old address. Open the Gmail label from step 2, or search for to:yourname@gmail.com. Anything recent in there is from someone who hasn't switched yet, and that is your to-do list.
Watch out for accounts where you sign in with the Sign in with Google button. Those are tied to your Google account, not just your address. To find them, open your Google Account and look under Security → Your connections to third-party apps & services. It lists every service you signed in to with Google.
For each of those services, there's usually a simple path:
- On the service's sign-in page, use Forgot password with your Gmail address. That gives you a password, so you can sign in with your Gmail address and that password instead of the Google button.
- Once you're signed in that way, change the email address on the account to your @cirrux.me address.
Some services let you change your email address yourself in their settings. Often you'll need to ask their support team to do it for you.
What stays at Google
Google Sync brings over your mail, calendars and contacts. The rest of your Google account stays put.
- Google Drive: download your files with Google Takeout (select only Drive), unzip the download and drop the folder into Cirrux Drive. Its folder structure is kept. Takeout saves Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
- Google Photos, YouTube and apps you bought on Android stay tied to your Google account. One more reason to keep it.
Keep your Gmail account
Don't delete your Google account once you've moved. As long as it exists, mail sent to your old address keeps reaching you in Cirrux, and nobody else can take the address. Google may close accounts that haven't been signed in to for two years, so sign in now and then.
Add your @cirrux.me address as the recovery email of your Google account, under Security → Recovery email in your Google Account. Once you stop checking Gmail, that's how you get back in if you forget your password.
